  Obtaining a Mortgage  Moving Tips

MOVING TIPS

Begin planning your move as soon as possible. 4-8 weeks before the move will give you plenty of time to take care of  the details and smooth out many of the bumps of moving. Here’s a suggested timeline and a few tips to make the move a little more painless:

Making your move

4-8 weeks before the move:

Hire a mover/reserve a truck. When selecting a moving company, be sure you understand all of the fees and limitations associated with each company. A quick call to the Better Business Bureau may save you more than a few headaches by giving you a good indication of the quality of service offered by each company.  If you are the mover, you’ll want to reserve a truck and begin recruiting family and friends to help.

Purchase boxes and packing materials. Don’t forget the markers, tape and scissors! You may also need to rent  dollies and moving blankets.

Now would be a good time to donate unwanted items to charity and/or have a moving sale. The more you can eliminate now, the less you will have to pack, move and store later.

Begin packing. Start with items that are seldom used or unnecessary. Be sure to label each container with its location and a general description of its contents. This will allow the containers to be placed in the correct room of your new home and speed retrieval of needed items.

Gather important items and paperwork. This will keep them safe and accessible amid the confusion of packing and moving.

If you are currently renting, notify your landlord of your planned move-out in writing.

2-3 weeks before the move:

Submit a change of address form to the post office.

Notify individuals and companies that you regularly receive mail from of your new address. Don’t forget financial institutions (banks, investment companies, etc.), doctors, insurance companies, magazines, and relatives.

Schedule the transfer of utilities. By scheduling the disconnect/connect dates with your utility companies, you can minimize you bills and insure that no one is “left in the dark”.

If possible, find a sitter for your small children and pets on moving day.

Begin reducing the amount of perishable food.

Confirm mover/truck reservation.

1 day before the move:

Confirm the arrival time of movers/truck pick-up time for tomorrow.

Finish packing. Don’t forget to keep out enough clothing, toiletries, medicine, and food for tomorrow.

Verify that all important items and paperwork are together and accessible. You may need keys, wallets/purses, contracts, etc.

Verify connection of utilities at your new home.

It’s moving day!

Take young children/pets to the sitter.

Double-check all storage spaces. Closets, attics, basements, etc.

Make sure that all pathways are free of hazards.

When the movers arrive, make them aware of any items that may need special attention. Valuables, fragile items, heavy items, etc.

Secure all doors and windows and turn off lights before leaving.

After arriving at your new home, verify that all pathways are free from obstructions.

Direct the placement of items as they are unloaded. This is where the careful labeling of containers will pay off.

Unpack, starting with necessary items.

Enjoy your new home!
